What's New at Maloney & Company...

May 2012

Maloney & Company would like to congratulate our client Sterling Associates Inc., Architects on celebrating 32 years in business and we hope they continue to be at the forefront of enegry-efficient design for many years to come.

Great job Bill - 32 years is quite an accomplishment!

April 2012

On April 24th we held the inaugural edition of a series of risk-management seminars at The Hartford Club in Hartford, Connecticut. Many local and regional firms joined us to learn about and discuss the challenges and opportunities being faced by design professional in our slowly-recovering industry. Maloney & Company's principal and founder, Michael Maloney, RLI's Director of Professional Enterprise Risk Solutions, Barbara Sable, and attorney Brian J. Donnell, Co-Leader of LeClairRyan's Construction Industry Group and Practice Team, each drew from their extensive experience to provide insights into the subject matter from their unique insurance and legal perspectives. In addition to the valuable information provided, qualifying participants also received continuing education credits, and for us it was a great opportunity to meet many of our clients for the first time and to catch up with some old friends.

We plan to hold a similar event later this year in New York and welcome any architect, engineer, or other design professional with an interest in risk-management to attend. For more information on this or other upcoming events please contact us.

On April 12th Eli attended the 2012 CANstruction awards gala in Providence, RI which supports local foodbanks through a design contest in which teams of area design and construction firms build sculptures out of canned goods. The event was hosted by the Rhode Island AIA, led by its President and Maloney & Company client Michael J. Warner, AIA who was unmistakable in his festive can-hat. This year, one of our long-time clients Lerner | Ladds + Bartels, Inc. recieved an honorable mention for their sculpture "CANgry Birds" (see slideshow below). Maloney & Company was proud to help sponsor this event and we look forward to seeing our friends and clients compete in future contests to benefit this worthy cause.

March 2012

On March 29th we met with Brett Fowler and Alexandra Yepez from OneBeacon Professional Insurance who shared news about some upcoming changes to their underwriting process and exciting new risk-management offerings that will soon become available to their insureds. We also discussed and provided feedback on how to improve and strengthen our working relationship in order to better serve our mutual clients. If you're on our emailing list you have probably seen the newsletters from OneBeacon that we've been sharing for several months now - another example of OneBeacon's working hard to earn our business, and yours!

February 2012

On February 9-10th we travelled to Philadelphia to meet with members of RLI Insurance's underwriting team to learn about their unique systems for assessing risk and rating different types of services and project types. We also discussed how different types of claims affect their underwriting and premium pricing. Afterwards, we spent time with Barbara Sable, Director of Professional Enterprise Risk Solutions for RLI's Professional Services Group to learn about the extensive risk-management resources available to their insureds, including a series of bi-monthly webinars that explore a wide range of topics relating to the specific issues and challenges faced by design professionals.

January 2012

On January 19th we met with attorneys Deborah Monteith Neubert and Kevin M. Godbout of the firm Neubert, Pepe & Monteith, P.C. to discuss issues relating to professional liability claims. Deborah and Kevin have significant experience representing architects and engineers in lawsuits, bringing unique perspectives and valuable insights into the claims process which help us to better support and advise our clients.

The previous Thursday, we met with Donald Doeg of Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, P.C. in Hartford, CT. Mr. Doeg is widely regarded as one of the top attorneys in the field whose extensive experience working with design professionals makes him a valuable resource for a range of legal issues that affect our insureds, from contracts to arbitration. We are honored and lucky to have such a strong relationship with Mr. Doeg.
