The End of the McMansion Era?

McMansions. They are the mega-houses of the middle and upper-middle class, born in the 1980s. These homes are usually cheaply built, and quickly grew in popularity during the 2008 financial recession for obvious reasons.

According to ArchDaily and real estate website Trulia, it is no longer an economic benefit to purchase one of these 3,000-5,000 square foot homes. Tracking data shows that the premium homeowners were willing to part with to purchase a McMansion has dropped in 85 of the largest 100 U.S. metropolitan areas from 2012 to 2016. People would now rather invest in smaller, older homes, which are appreciating in value.
