The Making of Maloney & Company

As we continue to hear the drumbeat of warnings, quarantines, travel advisories and health protocols, I wanted to offer something more hopeful in this post.  Back in January you might recall that I announced this was our 20th year in business, surely a worthy milestone to note, even in the midst of a pandemic!  And since many of you have been clients for much or all of those 20 years, I wanted to thank you again for your many years of loyalty!

In my February post, the last one before we turned our attention to posting helpful information on Covid19, you can see me as a young account executive at Design Insurance, a firm that no longer exists.  Some of you commented that you still had the odd hole-punch around your office, or recalled fondly the peculiar color of ecru that was once used to create all computers…

Well, I left Design Insurance in 1995 and for several months had my own insurance agency, based out of my apartment in Hoboken, NJ.  But I quickly realized I would need a better infrastructure to support my clients in the way they needed, and I teamed up with Arlene Petty and Linda Burton, two knowledgeable insurance agents that also specialized in helping design firms.  We worked together in the Rochelle Park, NJ offices of Petty Burton Maloney Associates for four years, until I moved to Connecticut and opened Maloney & Company, LLC in 2000.

My first office, in Madison, CT, was one room in an office occupied by a prominent accounting firm, and a shared secretary.  From that humble beginning we moved to our own offices a few doors down the street, then eventually to our permanent home in Guilford, where we have been since 2008. – Michael J.
